Duck hunting and waterfowl hunting in Eastern South Dakota

hunting birds in south dakota
Duck hunting is a lot of fun and waterfowl hunting is one of the more popular hunting sports in the world. Duck and goose hunters are a pretty social group, on the whole and it's as much a social calling as it is a hunt. If you've ever been to a Ducks Unlimited banquet you know what I mean. If you haven't been to one I highly recommend you go.

Waterfowl hunting has a culture all its own and even has it's own dress code. If you aren't dressed right your buddies are going to laugh at you. Of course it also helps you stay concealed while in or out of a hunting blind. Warmth is also important so be sure to get good hunting clothes. It's hard to hunt when you are shivering.

You can also wear what you'd wear goose hunting as it's almost the same sport. Some think waterfowl hunting is not a sport but I totally disagree with that and so does most of South Dakota. It's a very hunter friendly place and has some of the best, duck, goose and pheasant hunting in the world. SD loves hunters.

Now days duck hunting is mostly a sporting activity around the world. Commercial hunting has been banned in most of the developed countries to help preserve the populations of ducks and geese.

There are signs that ducks and geese were hunted during the Ice Age. Cave drawings show that duck hunting has been going on since early on in human existence. Ducks and swans appearing on cave paintings in Europe. There is also evidence of duck hunting in Egypt, as a picture on the tomb of Khum-Hotpe shows a man catching ducks in a creek or river. Ducks were also hunted by early man in the Americas, as Peruvian art shows.

This international history shows duck hunting popularity had spread around the world. It is especially popular in North America, where the largest number of localized ducks can be located. Most ducks use the Mississippi River as a migratory guide and many duck hunts take place along the river. However there are other major flyways besides the Mississippi. Arkansas is a major hotbed of duck hunting, with Stuttgart being considered the "duck hunting capital of the world".

The tools of the trade are simple enough, from a hunting decoys set to a shotgun and duck call. Naturally a hunting blind helps. The essence of duck hunting is based around using the decoys and the duck call in tandem to lure the ducks towards the decoys. When the ducks head for the decoys and get in range the fun begins.

A lot of waterfowl conservation experts agree that the hunting of any type of waterfowl does little to help the situation. In fact, most marsh and wetland areas are shrinking at tremendous rates. giving rise the the criticism that duck hunting diminishes a precious resource. There are several organizations that constantly fight with duck hunters over this problem.

Ducks Unlimited is an international organization that stands as the leader in non-profit marshland protection and the protection of waterfowl. Ducks Unlimited works with hunters to protect the marshlands and protect the hunter's way of life. The main goal of Ducks Unlimited is the conservation of localized habitats where ducks can be found and enabling the survival of more ducks by creating better places for them to live.

Still, some slob hunters ignore this philosophy and have no interest in protecting habitats. They leave big messes, shoot protected birds and in general give a bad name to a great sport. Duck and goose hunting remains a controversial sport because of this aspect. Every year you hear about some dumbass that shot a trumpeter swan or other rare bird. Without the cooperation of hunters and marshland protectors, duck hunts may become a thing of the past.

Do your part, know what you are shooting or don't shoot. Clean up after yourself and leave the area you hunted better than you found it. Don't shoot over your limit and try to take ducks that are more plentiful. That way your children and grandchildren will be able to have the same fun duck hunting, as you do.

If you're looking for a place to stay in one of the best hunting areas in the world check out the Lake Preston, South Dakota, motel. They are very, very hunter friendly. Yes, The Lake Preston Motel is the name of the place. I've stayed there before and they are a great help to goose, pheasant and duck hunters.
