South Dakota goose hunting has been good for years now. The first year I lived in Lake Preston, SD I was amazed at the numbers of geese and ducks flying overhead for days at at a time. Fall migration of waterfowl from Canada filled the sky with more flocks and birds than I could have ever counted. South Dakota goose hunting is great in both the fall and the spring.
SD has a spring goose hunting season for snows, blues and ross' geese. The 2009 spring season for snow geese is from February 14, 2009 through May 3rd and again this year the hunting is expected to be excellent. Snow goose hynting has been excellebt for more than a few yers now and daily limits are common. Spring goose hunting is as good as fall but no Federal waterfowl stamp is required. It's a special goose season to thin out some of the snow and blue geese due to their ruining their Canadian habitat from over population. I've seen as many as an estimated 200,000 geese sitting on Lake Thompson in the spring and fall. So many that when they took off in a big group you couldn't see the shore on the other side of the lake. There are geese and ducks in the area most months of the year. Always a few that don't seem to leave. So be sure to bring your hunting dogs along and some warm hunting clothes. If you forget any of your duck hunting gear there are a ton of stores around Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Brooking, etc that sell all kinds of apparel. Boat hunting Lake Thompson might be okay but I'm sure you can find an easier goose hunting lake if you ask around. Some people bring along their portable goose hunting blinds and others just hire some goose hunting guides. Altho I don't know any hunting guides in the Lake Preston area I'm, sure if you ask at the Bait Box they will know a couple guides. They also have some hunting supplies. You can also check here at Hunting Guide - Hunting World Top 100 There are a few nice hunting lodges around the area but I'm not sure if any of them have a lot of hunting land or if they have land with hunting leases. Both are possible. Some people believe in hunting by the moon phase and it may make a difference. I read some survey results about hunting that suggested more trophies were taken during the full moon. At least a greater percentage than was statistically normal. According to the South Dakota GF&P the Canada geese hunting dates for this year are from Sept. 27, 2008 -- Dec. 21, 2008. There are a couple of different dates for two of the hunting areas but when you get your waterfowl license that should be explained. Also, the white fronted goose hunting season is from Sept. 27, 2008 -- Dec. 21, 2008. The fall Light goose season includes snows, blues and ross' geese is the same as white goose season with a daily limit of 20 according to the SD GFP dept. and an unlimited possesion limit of snow geese, blue geese and ross' geese. Of course I don't think it would be a good idea to have more than twenty geese per day even if it appears you could have an unlimited amount of geese. The Lake Preston motel has great rates on rooms for hunters. Not only do they have rooms but they have a game cleaning area and can give you some good information on where the best South Dakota goose hunting has been. They are located at Lake Preston Motel, 107 Fremont Ave. North, Lake Preston, South Dakota 57249 Phone 605-847-4424 however I would advise you to book your room early. Hunting and fishing in SD in the fall is really good. For more goose hunting tips check out the forums at the link on the left or ask at the Bait Box in Lake Preston. It's by the motel and they do carry a few supplies for hunters. Good luck with your South Dakota goose hunting this year. ;) Duck hunting tips and hunting in South Dakota > > < < Pheasant hunting local SD hunting lodges |
