Rifles, shotguns and hunting safety tips

Your hunting rifles, shotguns and pistols are very dangerous so please read these hunting tips for safety in the field.

Hunting has survived even tho we have gotten modernized and no longer have to rely on hunting skills to eat. It has become one of the worlds most popular pastimes and hobbies. However hunting can also be one of its most dangerous. Every hunter should have some basic knowledge before heading out into the field.

The most important tip I know is never hunt when you are intoxicated or drinking. The next most important hunting tip is about how to walk and carry a gun. It is important to make sure that the muzzle of your gun always points away from you and any others with you. There are many ways to do this.

One way is the side carry, which is carrying the rifle or shotgun with one hand and tucking the stock between the elbow and the body. Don't use the side carry when you are walking through dense brush or with other hunters walking in front of you.

Then there is the ready carry. Using the ready carry, the rifle or shotgun is held with two hands and the muzzle is pointed up and frontward. Your trigger finger should be rested on the trigger guard and not on the trigger itself.

The sling carry lets both of your hands be free. A sling is used to carry the rifle or shotgun over your shoulder, giving more freedom of movement. It's mostly used when walking from one hunting area to the next.

You may prefer the shoulder carry method of carrying a gun. Using this technique the muzzle of the gun is pointing back and up. It's probably not a good idea to use this method when you have others behind you.

Finally there's the trail carry. That's when the rifle or shotgun is held at a point between the action and the trigger. However if someone is walking ahead of you, it's not a good idea to use the trail carry because the muzzle is pointing down and forward.

When you have established a safe and comfortable way to carry your weapon it's important to plan what you are going to do when you see game. Before encountering the target, you and the rest of the hunters in your group should establish a 'zone of fire'. That's where each of you will shoot and track when prey appears. It is very important that you never encroach on another hunters zone.

When duck or goose hunting from a boat, there are general safety precautions that should be followed. Make sure the shotgun to be used by the person sitting in the bow of the boat is unloaded. That gun should be placed facing the bow. The hunter in the stern places his unloaded gun in the stern with its muzzle pointing to the rear. You should always remember to anchor the boat before shooting.

To keep their skills sharp, hunters often practise on shooting ranges. These controlled shooting areas have a set of commands for the safety of all the shooters. If a range master says, 'the range is hot', it means that the shooting range is open and there are no live objects, such as people or animals, on the firing range.

If a range master says, 'cease fire', it means to stop all firing immediately. Another command on the firing range is 'ready'. This is the last precaution taken by shooters before the 'range is hot' command. Each shooter repeats the phrase 'ready' from right to left to ensure the firing line is clear and safe.

Following these safety tips will keep you safer whether hunting with a rifle, pistol or shotgun. Always follow basic gun safety rules. You don't want to be another Cheney when hunting.
