Whitetail deer and deer hunting are a dangerous topic in some places but not in South Dakota. Hunters love deer and want to be able to hunt them. Non hunters love deer and don't want hunters to hunt them. Small problem when the two groups meet. Whitetail hunting in SD is almost always good, every year. I see so many dead deer laying alongside the interstates it makes me thing a guy should just put his hunting stand at the edge of the cornfield by the interstate. Eastern SD is whitetail hunting mostly altho a mule deer will get lost and be found in the eastern part of the state and sometimes into Minnesota. Mule deer hunting takes place in Western SD and there is a lot of western South Dakota public hunting ground for your hunting trip. Actually public hunting is pretty much available all over the state and for most types of game, not just for deer. Western South Dakota deer hunting can be a lot of fun. I've never actually gone .357 magnum deer hunting but there is a guy who posts on the forum and he has taken one with his Thompson Contender. I always wanted to try that and never got that far. There have been a couple of people who posted in the hunting forum that have already gotten their deer by bow this season. Bow hunting is popular and people get all excited about a south dakota whitetail archery hunt. Some even have multiple cameras along game trails and in prime habitat. Quite nice to be able to pick out your trophy in advance. Every time I see a picture of a deer taken that way I always wonder what the deer thought when the flash went off. I don't know about where you live but here in SD they could triple or quadruple the number of deer permits and we'd still have to many. It's a shame to see all the dead deer along the highways. Same in Minnesota. Did you know that despite what some people tell you about the "Good Ole Days" there are more deer in this country now than there were when the pilgrims landed. Seems crops help deer populations. The more we plant the larger the herd grows. You really have to like hunting and the outdoors tho because the economics of hunting don't work out very well in terms of time put in or money. Guns are expensive, the right clothes cost plenty and then there are the licenses, gas, etc. It can make that deer cost 20-30 bucks a pound and more by the time you get it skinned and cut up. I just learned the other day you can even buy hunting insurance. I don't know what it covers but I know I've hunted with a few people it would have been good to be insured. Ask your insurance guy if he has hunting insurance. It might come in handy. So when are the best hunting times in South Dakota? Fall is always good and it's fall now so get your trip planned and head to South Dakota for some whitetail or mule deer hunting. You'll be glad you did.
